Public perception
The different questions were:
Is the stranger a threat?
Yes : 40% No : 55% No answer/No idea : 5%
Do you think immigration harms or enhances the culture of a country?
Harms : 55% Enhances : 35% No answer/No idea : 10%
Do you speak in favor of the global border opening?
Yes : 53% No : 42% No answer/No idea : 5%
According to the majority of those questioned, the immigrant is becoming a threat, and it’s not very surprising as the extremist ideas are soaring in the country. Since the significant immigrant inflow in the 70’s, the immigrant is stigmatized because of the fact that immigration led to precariousness and violence at the end of the 90’s. Nowadays, the outset of many society problems is due to immigration concerns according to a large part of the society. Borders should be closed for them and the illegal immigrants should be sent back to their country with all their problems.
Moreover, immigration frightens since it represents a threat for the domestic culture. With the rise of communautarism, French people (and old people above all) want to keep their traditions and culture intact. The example of the minarets in Switzerland is a relevant case.
According to the majority of questioned people’s answers, the global border opening is a good thing. It’s not really coherent with the other answers, but seeing as how we did not question a lot of people, the sample may be not representative and may explain the incoherence.

Personally, I'm all for legal immigration. I think it is good for the country. Illegal immigration, however, is a drain on the economy. As far as culture is concerned, as children we're taught to embrace all cultures. In schools there is always this emphasis on diversity. Americans welcome it and enjoy meeting people from all parts of the world. Even in small towns there are Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, etc. immigrants that bring business and culture to the area.
ReplyDeleteI second Stephanie's comment! Can you guys post the link or source you used to get those statistics? My parents legally immigrated to America, so I find this case study very interesting. Are these questions that the two of you asked to a group of people, or did you find this information from an older source or experiment? What immigration case in particular caused violence in the 90s? Tell me more!
ReplyDeleteI found this really interesting. I think it is a shame that people can be so closed minded about immigration. I'm not sure what could be done to change these opinions, but I feel like this survey had a better outcome than it would have five years ago.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that this survey figures are scary. However we can not interpret this statistics seriously because we have any information about the people questioned. They may come from the high society for most of them and consequently have not an objective point of view.
ReplyDeleteI totally approve your remarks, this survey is based on statistics, and there are not often representative of the global opinion...
